Hassan, The Kite Runner

At the end of chapter 7, Amir witnesses the attack and rape of Hassan after Hassan has run down the final kite of the tournament for Amir. Why doesn't Amir step in or help? What is he thinking as he witnesses this? Discuss your opinion of Amir's actions.

  1. Simply, this one paragraph from the book sums it up.
"I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan---the way he'd stood up for me all of those times in the past---and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran. I ran because I was a coward, I was afraid of Assef and what he would do to me. I was afraid of getting hurt. That's what I told myself as I turned my back to the alley, to Hassan."
In my opinion, Amir should have helped Hassan. By him not helping him, it just proves how much of a better person Hassan will always be compared to Amir. Hassan would have saved Amir if the tables were turned. The only reason that happened to him is because he wouldn't give up the kite that was meant for Amir.

  2. I think that if Amir thought that he and Hassan were true friends that there should not have been a slight doubt in his mind to immediately be at Hassan's side. Hassan does everything for Amir, and Amir gives him nothing in return. Hassan will always be the better person compared to Amir. Amir should have considered how proud his father would have been if he found out how Amir stood up for Hassan. Amir is an untrustworthy coward.

  3. Amir is a coward that cannot stick up for a friend that would do anything for him. When he is witnessing it he is trying to decide what to do. But he decides to walk away from his friend who is getting raped in an alley. The only reason Hassan is in that alley getting raped is because of Amir in the first place. This really shows that Amir is a coward and I hope he fixes his actions.

  4. Amir doesn't step in to help Hassan because he is afraid of what Assef would do to him. He was afraid that Assef would beat his severally. Instead Amir just ran away and acted like he never seen Hassan in the ally. Amir knows that he is wealthier than Hassan and doesn't want to be seen helping a Hazara out. As he witnesses this he was thinking about helping him and standing up for him because Hassan was always there for him no matter what. He was there for him with the slingshot when Assef wanted to beat up Amir. I think Amir should of stayed and helped out Hassan. If Amir would have stepped in I don't think Hassan would of gotten hurt as bad as he did, I think Amir could of stopped Assef some how. Hassan really wanted to keep that kite to give to Amir so he took those chances and kept it for Amir. And Amir didn't even step in or acknowledge Hassan getting rapped.

  5. Amir doesn't help Hassan because he possesses no bravery. Amir was thinking that Assef could possibly do the same to him or hurt him in some way. I think that Hassan is a coward and a pathetic excuse of a friend. If Amir would have stood up for Hassan, it would have been a greater feeling than getting the last kite and if given the parallel situation, Hassan would have been more than happy to save Amir, no matter the consequences. If I were Hassan, I wouldn't put up with Amir's crap anymore because every time Amir needs help with anything, Hassan puts him first, and he would never do the same for Hassan. Hassan is just overall a better person than Amir.

  6. Amir does not step in because he failed to care as much for Hassan than the kite he had run for him. Amir wanted the kite to give to Baba, and he thought that helping Hassan NOT give it up would be a bad thing I guess. I am pretty mad with the guy, he makes some horrible decisions and is very crude with Hassan. It's annoying. Amir had better shape up soon, or I am going to start disliking this book primarily because I cannot stand the guy.

  7. Amir doesn't help out as he is scared. Well duh, Amir saw what was going on to Hassan and was like, "Yeah, I'd prefer not to be raped". Amir could have done SOMETHING, but all in all he is just a really crappy person to go along with how he is a really crappy character, and in the end, it really just made so many more problems with him not doing anything. I have no idea where the book is going to go from here but I really don't see what more could happen. All I heard about the book was how someone got raped, and past this point its kinda just like ehhhhhhh what now?

  8. In chapter seven when Hassan gets raped by Assef, Amir is in complete shock and doesn't know what to do. In the book he talks about how he was afraid of getting hurt if he stepped in; however, I think Amir was more worried about how he would be viewed by his peers in his social class. While Amir is watching Hassan being raped, all he can think about is all the things Hassan as done for him, and all the times that Hassan has stood up for him in the past. In my opinion, I think this was Amir's chance to show who he really was, and his morals and feeling toward standing up for what is right. Overall I think Amir dropped the ball big time and will be regretting his decision for the rest of his young life.

  9. Amir doesn't help because one he doesn't want to be friends with Hassan because of the social and religious differences and two Amir only cares about himself. I believe that Amir is a stuck up rich kid who only doesn't care about anyone but himself.

  10. "I opened my mouth and almost said something... The rest of me life might have turned out differently if I had." - Amir
Amir doesn't step in to defend Hassan because they were never really true friends. Hassan viewed Amir as a best friend, while Amir pretended to be his friend knowing that he was just his servant. As Amir was watching Hassan get tortured, he knew he was a coward. He just couldn't bring himself to help Hassan, because he only cares about himself. My opinion of Amir is that he is a liar, a awful friend and even more awful person.

  11. Amir didn't help Hassan because he didn't want to be seen helping someone in a different social class. Amir was also afraid that Assef would do the same thing to him but worse. I think that if Amir and Hassan was as best of friends as they say they are then Amir would of stepped in instead of leaving his friend helpless. With Amir not helping it just shows who he really is.

  12. Amir didn't help Hassan because he was afraid what Assef and the other two boys would do to him. He didn't want to step in and help Hassan because he didn't want to get hurt. Amir thought to himself that Assef was right, that Hassan was the price he had to pay to win Baba. He thought that nothing was free in this world and that Hassan was just a Hazara and nothing more. As Amir watched Hassan get raped, he realized that Hassan would save him if it was the other way around as he had always stoop up for Amir in the past. In my opinion, Amir should have done everything he could to help Hassan. Even though Hassan is just his servant, he had always stood up for Amir and was always by his side. If I was Amir, I would have stood up for Hassan knowing that he would do the same thing for me.

  13. I think Amir should have stepped in. after all Hassan would have if the roles would have been reversed. All Amir thinks about is every single time Hassan stood up for him but yet he runs away in the end because he is afraid of what Assef will do to him.

  14. After searching for Hassan for hours Amir finally finds him in an alley getting attacked by Assef. Assef says he will let Hassan go if he gives him the blue kite that Amir won. Hassan respects and looks up to Amir so he will no give it up. So instead Assef's friends pin Hassan down and Assef rapes him. Amir has a decision to either stick up for him or run away. He chose the second option. He chooses to run because he would be to ashamed to stick up for his servant and he didn't want to get raped to. After he runs away I lost even more respect for him. As the book goes on I feel as though he gets more rude and I lose more respect.

  15. While chasing a kite down Hassan was attacked by Assef and his friends. He was chasing down the kite to give it to Amir. Assef wanted the kite, and there was no way that Hassan was going to give it up, because it was for Amir only. Amir comes across the scene, but he doesn't even help Hassan. He thought it would be wrong to help his "servant," he also fears that he could get assaulted too. I lost a ton of respect for Amir after this, because he knows that Hassan would step in and stand up for Amir, but since Amir is so selfish he lets the one person who really cares for him get raped.

  16. Hassan is running after the kite that him and Amir won. as he gets the kite Assef and his friends follow Hassan into a alley and make Hassan give him the kite. He refuses and for refusing, he gets raped. Amir is looking all over for him and he finds them but as he looks down the alley way, he notices that Hassan looks scared which was different for Hassan. Then he notices that Hassan is face down in the dirt with his pants thrown across the alley, Amir is wondering if he should stop it or just run because he is afraid of what the people in the town would save for him helping his servant. he turns around and doesn't look back at Hassan or the other boys because he is a coward.

  17. Amir does not intervene because he fears that he will become the next victim of the vicious attack. Amir wants to stop it but fear paralyzes him and he does nothing but watch. Amir is a coward and a terrible friend. No one should be able to stand by and watch that happen to a friend.

  18. Amir doesn't help because he is overtaken by fear, fear of what might happen to him if he stepped in to help Hassan he turns his back on his back on Hassan and the dark alley. My opinion is he is a terrible friend and person he thinks everything is about him and he cares for no one but himself.

  19. Amir does not step in to help Hassan being raped by Assef because he believes that he will earn Baba's love if Hassan is not able to win the Kite runner contest. Amir also worries about what people in town will think about him for helping his Servant. Amir is looked at as a coward. Amir has been jealous of Hassan because of the way Baba has treated him, so this was his chance to earn some respect from Baba and that's why he chooses to not do anything about Hassan being raped by Assef.

  20. Amir doesn't get involved because he is afraid that what happened to Hassan, will then happen to him. He thinks that if he stops it, then they will just do it to both of them. So instead he stands there and does nothing but watches it all happen right before his eyes. By doing nothing about it, just goes to prove how selfish he really is, and only is thinking about his safety and what others will think about him for saving his servant. He is a bad friend for doing this, no body should be able to just stand there and watch it all go by without doing anything about it.

  21. Amir does not help Hassan because he is scared of what could happen to him. Amir is a coward. Hassan would do anything for Amir, but when the time comes that Hassan needs help, Amir just turns his back and walks away. Amir should have done the right thing and helped Hassan, but because he did not help he created a bunch of other problems.

  22. Amir does not step in because he was scared and thought that he would get hurt or get made fun of if he would of stepped in to help. Amir said that he was coward and I agree with him and he is not a true friend at all because if he was he would of stood up for him even if he would of got hurt like Hassan would of done for him.

  23. Amir watched as his friend Hassan was being attacked. In my opinion he should have stepped in and tried to help despite the potential consequences because he is a friend to Hassan. Even if he did not know him it is a shame. Amir is showing his true colors. He should have the courage to help a friend that would do the same for him, especially with such a serious matter. At this point I have lost respect for Amir.

  24. He doesn't do anything be cause he is too scared to face what might come from Assef if he would stand up for Hassan. He knows he should help, but his fear and cultural placing made him just turn away. In the Pakistani culture people like Hassan are ridiculed and are treated poorly because people think they are lesser then they are.

  25. Amir doesn't step in and help because he is afraid what Assef and his friends will do to him and doesn't want to get hurt too. He says he is a coward because he runs away and just watches. Amir doesn't want anyone to know that he is friends with Hassan because he doesn't want to make it worse by helping. Hassan has stuck up for Amir a lot but Amir never stuck up for Hassan. Amir is a bad friend for letting this happen.

  26. Amir does not help Hazzan, because Amir fears he will get hurt as well. Amir wants to help Hazzan, but he is too scared to help. I think Amir is a coward and a awful person and friend. Amir should not have simply stood there and watched Hazzan get raped.

  27. Amir doesn't stand up because he is afraid of what Assef and what he will do to him. He thinks that if he steps in and attempts to save Hassan that Assef will just rape both of them. So he choose to just stand by and let it happen it proved how selfish Amir really was. He is not a very good friend, because a good friend would have helped Hassan out, not sit back and watch it happen without doing anything about it.

  28. Amir does not help or get involved with what happens to Hassan for so many reasons that make Amir look so bad. Amir is so jealous of Hassan and Baba's relationship with each other and also he knows that if he steps in to help Hassan he will get judged and the town will make fun of him for sticking up for his servant. I think that Amir did the worse thing possible by not helping Hassan when he got raped and tortured. Even though Amir is jealous of Hassan they are friends and he should have stuck up for him.

  29. Amir does not step in and help Hassan because he is afraid of what might happen to himself. The whole time he is thinking about how he should step in like Hassan stepped in for him, but he was a coward and too afraid. He was deciding on whether to run or help him, but in the end he ran. I think that he should have stepped in or got someone to help him. If he did not do either of these things, which he did not, he should have told someone about what he seen. My opinion of Amir is not the same as when I started reading the book.

  30. Amir doesn't step in for help because he is too scared to stand up for what he believes in. That is why Baba doesn't treat Amir with respect because he knows Amir is too scared to fight for what is right. When Amir can start fighting for what he believes in then Baba will start to treat him differently. As Amir is witnessing the rape, he knows it is wrong and feels bad but he keeps telling himself that it is okay because he is Hazara and deserves it. My opinion of Amir has changed completely. He isn't a good person and I don't like how he treats Hasaan.

  31. I think that if Amir thought that he and Hassan were friends that there should not have been a thought in his mind to immediately be at Hassan's side. Hassan does everything he can for Amir, and Amir gives him nothing at all in return. Hassan will be a better individual than Amir. Amir should have thought of how proud baba would have been if he found out how Amir stood up for Hassan. Amir is an untrustworthy friend if you could call him that.

  32. Amir did not help Hassan in fear that he would become the next victim. All he does is stand there and watch and wishes he could do something to help. My opinion on Amir is that he is not a good friend at all. He never wants to help Hassan and only thinks of himself and never does anything to help Hassan.

  33. Amir is afraid and doesn't know what will happen if he gets involved with the fight. He stands off to the side and watches as Hasson gets beat up. If I were Amir I would have gone over and helped my friend get away and not stand there and watch.

  34. Amir doesn't step in or help because he is a coward. He choses to not help Hassan because he was scared of Assef. Amir chose to run away from the situation instead of sticking up for Hassan like Hassan has done previously for Amir. Personally, I think Amir should have stuck up for his friend. If Amir cares for Hassan as much as he says he does then he would have stuck up or him. If Amir would have chosen o stick up for Hassan then their lives would have changed out much differently.

  35. Amir does not want to say anything because he figures he will be next. He just sits aside and keeps quiet.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Amir is scared to help Hassan because he thinks that he'll look bad if he does. I think Amir is a coward for not helping. I think that he doesn't help because he is jealous of him and babas relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Amir doesn't help because of there relationship, he doesn't want others to now that Hassan is his best friend. He was thinking that if stepped in that they would turn on him. I think he should have helped him.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Amir is afraid that if he helps him he will get in more trouble. He stands back and watches Amir get beat up. Then he leaves because he does not want to get blamed or questioned about the fight. Amir would not be a good friend at all because he does not care about his other friends.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Amir doesn't step in because he is afraid of Assef. During the rape he is panicking about whether he should help Hassan or if he shouldn't intervene.
I think that Amir is not a very good friend since none would ever leave their friends like that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Amir does not step in because he was scared of what would happened to him if he did. Amir is not as brave as Hassan is and is not a true friend. He decided to run instead of step in because he is a coward. Amir let down the person would who would of stepped in and helped him with everything.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Amir doesn't help because he's not the kind of person that likes to fight or stand up for what is right. Amir and the Hassan have a different social and religious. I believe that Amir is a stuck up rich kid that doesn't like to stand up and fight for what is right. Amir didn't stand because he thought that what happen to the Hassan might happen to him also.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Amir is thinking that the same will happen to him, and he doesn't want to believe that Hassan is his equal because he says "He's just a Hazara, right?" my personal opinion is he should have at least tried to help in someway. Possible run for help or tell Baba what happened to Hassan.
